Hayward G. Flickner 86, of Evansville, IN, passed away on Wednesday, November 4, 2009, at River Point Health Campus. Hayward was a well-known doctor, historian, and avid tennis player. Many will remember Dr. Flickner from his practice on Lincoln Avenue between Memorial High School and the University of Evansville. Others will smile as they remember his ability to recall every detail of his treasured youth, growing up in the historic area of downtown Evansville. Others, too, will remember his agility and energy on the tennis court. Hayward attended Evansville College (a/k/a the University of Evansville). He then graduated from the Indiana University School of Dentistry. While at IU, he was active in the Sigma Chi Fraternity. A decorated Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy, Hayward proudly served 4 years aboard ship as the resident Dentist. During WW II, he traveled throughout England, Germany, and later Japan. Shortly after setting up his practice, he met the love of his life, his wife Phyllis, who preceded him in death. A member of the Petroleum Club, Evansville Kennel Club, and the Evansville Country Club, he was always there with a 'story to tell'. He was also a Docent of the Evansville Museum of Art, History and Science . He was most proud of his work with the Evansville Parks Foundation, serving on the Charter Board which established that group. A staunch supporter of the Musicians' Club, and later the Evansville Philharmonic, their home was the setting for many a glamorous cocktail party and/or dinner. Hayward was always the perfect host – a sparring partner to his gracious hostess, Phyllis. He is survived by granddaughter, Lana Hodges and husband Todd, of Salisbury, Maryland; Grandson, Bradley Hauser and wife Taryn, of Indianapolis, IN, and their son Bradley Hayward Hauser; sister-in-law, Mildred Zapp Flickner, of Evansville, IN; and brother-in-law, Jack Schriber, and wife Sue, of Evansville, IN; and nieces and nephews: Nancy Gosline York-Erwin and husband Steve; and Elizabeth Graeme York; grandniece, Genevieve Graeme York-Erwin; and grandnephews, Ross Arthur York-Erwin and John Otter York-Erwin. He is preceded in death by his wife, Phyllis; daughter, Tara; brother, Edward Arthur Flickner; and sister, Genevieve Ann "Kitty" York. The family wants to acknowledge their dear friend, Carol McClintock. You cannot imagine the extent to which Carol went to accommodate Hayward's every wish. The French have a term, "aimee", when loosely translated, means "dear and special person, friend." That word best described Carol. God has blessed the Flickner family with Carol's presence. Visitation will be from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 8, 2009, at Ziemer Funeral Home, East Chapel, 800 S. Hebron Avenue, Evansville, IN. Graveside services will be held on Monday, November 9, 2009, at 10:30 a.m. at Oakhill Cemetery, 1400 E. Virginia Street, Evansville, IN, with Mr. Lloyd Winnecke conducting the service. The Retired Veterans' Memorial Club will perform military rites at the graveside. The family gratefully acknowledges the wonderful care given by the staff at River Point Health Campus, along with Care Provider and friend, Joseph Martin, as well as Dr. Karl Sash and his loving and supportive staff. Memorial Contributions may be made to the Evansville Parks Foundation, Inc., P.O. Box 3112, Evansville, IN 47730. Condolences may be made to the family online at www.ziemerfuneralhome.com. * * * * *
