Condolence & Memory Journal

To the Kassis Family,

I fondly remember many many trips to the shoe store with my mother and my grandmother when I was a young child. Mr. Kassis had an inexplicable manner of connecting with young children in a very kind, patient, and gentle way. He was a person who did a great service to the community and I will always remember the store as one of the bright spots in King Street's history. I am joined by my family members in expressing deepest condolences to you at this time. Please know that we will always be so very thankful for the Kassis family and that we are thinking of you and wishing you peace and love at this sad time.

Dear Mrs. Kassis, Danny, Sonya, Jane and all of your family,
I loved Fred. I haven't seen him in years but the image that comes to mind whenever I think of him is that great wide smile and joking, inviting personality of his. I treasure the memories of jousting and joking with Fred at the BE gym. He always made me feel like a friend. I don't think any of us will forget "the card" from years ago. I can still see him shaking his head, looking down with that grin and disbelievingly saying "Beelee Gay". Fred made us all better people as he gave without expecting to receive in return. Through my years of playing ball with Danny at BE, Fred - every year - would make custom orthotics for me and would never let my parents pay him. He did this so that I wouldn't suffer the painful effects of shin splints. Fred was a good man and his family is incredible. I hope people say the same about me one day. Mrs. Kassis, my heart goes out to you all. Thanks Mr. Kassis for being a friend. Your memory will always remain. "Beelee Gay"

Dear Kassis Family,

We were so sorry to learn of Fred's passing. He was a fine gentleman, good friend and neighbor. We have missed seeing him the past several years. We loved hearing his stories especially how he courted Joanne. We enjoyed playing dominoes with him (he always had to win). He was so proud of his family and it was our privilege getting to know each of you when you were in Boone. He adored his grandchildren. He was a fine man indeed.

We are keeping each of you in our thoughts and prayers.

Danny and extended family, I am very sorry to hear about your Dad passing away.. You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers. I am so sorry I can't attend some of the services, but as you are well aware, that is impossible right now. I will continue to pray for your family.

Just wanted the family to know that we are sorry for your loss and
will keep you in our hearts and prayers in the coming days. Mr. Kassis
was a wonderful man. We knew him from the downtown Charleston
store when our children were needing shoes that fit well. My husband
and I also needed him later on when we needed his help once again in
getting comfortable shoes. He saved us from having surgery.
We will always be grateful to this wonderful man. Thank you, Mr.
Kassis, for being there for our family.

Happened to be in Charleston on business yesterday, and with some time to kill before the airport, was running some errands near the store. Something I can't explain inspired me yesterday morning, 40+ years after I moved away from Charleston, to stop in, ask after Mr. Kassis, and explain to the gentleman running the store how nice he always was to me (he always seemed to know when I'd been out of school for asthma-related hospitalizations). It was then that I learned he'd passed away just a few hours before. Just wanted the Kassis family to know how sorry I am for your loss, and to know that even yesterday, someone he hadn't seen in more than 40 years was still affected by his kindness. God bless. You are in the prayers of the Wheaton family. Sorry I can't make it back to St. Joseph's to express that in person.

Our hearts ache for the Kassis family. May Almighty God comfort you in this time of great sadness. True examples of the American dream such as Fred Kassis are becoming increasingly difficult to find. Our community has lost a great role model and his passing will be grieved by all who knew him.

Dear Joanne and family, Sorry to hear of your loss. I will always have a great memory of the time that Joanne, Fred and I went to Alabama for a tennis tournament. What a wonderful time we had. I remember just meeting Fred and the impression he left with me as being such a kind, considerate and sweet person.
God be with you all at this sad time.

Dear Kassis family; we were very sorry to read of the passing of Mr. Kassis. We are never prepared for the passing of our loved ones, and this is because originally we were not created to die, but this is just a temporary situation. Soon the true God will return the earth back to its original paradise condition and Mr. Kassis will be able to live on earth eternally.
