Dr. Michael A. Browne, 85, of Stamford, CT and Jupiter, FL passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Saturday, January 5, 2013. He was born in 1927, the fifth of eleven children, in Longford, Ireland, and grew up in the city of Cork. Educated at Presentation College, Cork, his love of language, especially Latin and classical Greek, led to his interest in medicine. His keen intellect earned him one of seven National
Scholarships granted by the Irish Government, allowing him to study at University College Cork, where he was graduated in 1950 with a degree as a doctor of medicine. He then trained extensively in medicine and surgery in Ireland and England, and ultimately chose to specialize in orthopaedic surgery. After achieving admission to the prestigious Royal College of Surgeons of England, he came to the United States in 1958, where he pursued further orthopaedic training in Boston at the Massachusetts General Hospital and in New York at the Hospital for Special Surgery of Cornell University. Subsequently, he earned certification from the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgeons and was elected to fellowship in both the American College of Surgeons and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. Dr. Browne established a successful private practice in Stamford, Connecticut, and was highly regarded for his general orthopaedic and microsurgical skill. He served as Director of the Orthopaedic Departments at both Stamford Hospital and Saint Joseph Hospital from 1978 to 1983. He maintained his academic interests by serving as an assistant clinical professor for both the Hospital for Special Surgery and New York Medical College.

Proud of his Irish roots, Dr. Browne co-founded the Irish American Orthopaedic Society, dedicated to greater fellowship among Irish, American, and British surgeons. He served as President of the organization from 1981 to 1983. Additionally, he was an active member of the Stamford Ancient Order of Hibernians and had a lifelong passion for Irish history and culture.

An avid golfer, Dr. Browne began enjoying this pastime at the Waterford Golf Club in Waterford, Ireland. He was later a longstanding member of the Innis Arden Golf Club in Old Greenwich, CT, and more recently, in his retirement, a member at Jonathan's Landing Golf Club in Jupiter, FL.

Loving father, devoted husband, dedicated physician, and tireless achiever, Dr. Browne is survived by the love of his life, his wife of 54 years, Kathleen Carmel; his five children, Francis ("Frank") an attorney in Stamford, CT; Rosemary, a geriatric physician in Tucson, AZ; Michael, an orthopaedic surgeon in Dallas/Fort Worth; Paul, an architect in Albuquerque, NM; and Colm, an attorney in Stamford, CT; their respective spouses, and twelve grand-children (Caitlin, Michael, Jack, Kathryn, Marissa, Liam, Fintan, Connor, Evan, Lauren, Anna Rose, and Elliott). Surviving siblings include his brother Dr. Francis Browne of Maryland, and sisters Doreen Lyons and Sister Emmanuel Browne of Cork, Ireland.

Dr. Browne's family and friends will celebrate a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30am on Wednesday, January 9, 2013 at St. Jude Catholic Church (204 US Highway One, Tequesta). The family will be receiving those who wish to express their condolences from 5-8pm on Tuesday, January 8, 2013, at the Taylor & Modeen Funeral Home (250 Center St, Jupiter). In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Hospice of Palm Beach County (5300 East Avenue, West Palm Beach, FL 33407).
