Peter Rus, 95, of Wyoming, went to be with his Lord Monday, January 14, 2013. Peter was the first of seven children born to Gertrude and Leonard Rus on their farm in Corsica, South Dakota on June 30, 1917. His father passed away when Peter was 13 years old and he assumed the duties of head of household leaving school to help on the family farm and traveling to other jobs in surrounding states to earn money to send home. In his twenties, he set out to pursue job opportunities in the auto industry in Michigan. It was there he met and married Edith Toppen, his wife of 57 years. They had three children, Loren (Larry), Nancy and Connie.
Peter served in World War II in the military police and was honorably discharged returning to Michigan to work for McInerney Spring and Wire in Grand Rapids. After his retirement at age 62 he enjoyed working in service to his community and was a long standing member of Wyoming's Parks and Recreation Commission. He also served for 5 years as Chairman of the Fellowship Club Financial Committee at the Pinery Park Senior Center. In 1998, he was honored with the Margaret Whitehead Senior of the Year award in the Leadership category. On his ninetieth birthday in 2007 the Ninety-Fourth Legislature of the State of Michigan honored him with a special tribute.
Peter was very active in his retirement and loved to play golf, go bowling, shoot pool, and play cribbage. He enjoyed traveling to Washington, Alaska, Hawaii, Canada and the Turks and Caicos Islands and other states throughout the U.S.
Peter is survived by his very special friend, Theresa Lackey: his children, Loren and Judy Rus and Connie Rus of Olympia, Washington, Nancy and Ken Haveman of Holland, Michigan; grandchildren, Aaron Rus, Kevin and Missy Rus, Jeremy and Sarah Haveman, Josh and Heather Haveman, Megan and Adam Jorritsma, Rebekah and Steven Bakker, Dylan Rus-Ingham and nine great grandchildren; brothers and sisters, Catherine Lloyd, Lenore Rus, Ron and Jean Rus, Dorothy Rus, Judy Toppen, Harold and Delores Toppen, and Donna Toppen. He is preceded in death by his wife, Edith Rus, and three brothers and a sister.
Memorial Service with the family will be held at 2 pm with visitation one hour prior on Friday, January 18, 2013 at Beverly Reformed Church – 2141 Porter Street SW, Wyoming. Pastor Eildert Zwart will be officiating. Interment will be at Grandville Cemetery. In honor of Peter, contributions may be made to Beverly Reformed Church.
