Rev. Lacy Oliver
November 13, 1923 - January 17, 2013
Kinston-Rev. Robert Lacy Oliver Sr., 89, received his heavenly promotion on Thursday, January 17, 2013. Lacy was born November 13, 1923 in Richmond, Virginia to the late Evan Ernest Oliver and Bernice Woolard Oliver. Lacy served with the United States Navy during World War II. He graduated from Wake Forest University and attended Southeastern Seminary. Lacy then began a ministry for Jesus that spanned fifty five years and four churches. He served New Bethel Baptist Church, Spillman Memorial Baptist Church, Rivermont Baptist Church and Union Baptist Church. He led a building campaign at each church and every church experienced tremendous growth. Lacy served his Lord on two mission trips to Africa where he was instrumental in the building of a church. He inspired many with his courage, strength and positive attitude. He treated everyone as if they were the most special person in the world and possessed a smile that could light up any room. Lacy worked many years in the Men's Department at J.C. Penny's and was also a member of American Legion Post #504 and the Moss Hill Ruritan Club.
A service to celebrate and honor Lacy's life will be held Saturday, January 19, 2013 at 11 a.m. from Rivermont Baptist Church with Rev. Ronnie Davis, Rev. Jon Hoey and Dr. Mike Cogdill officiating. Interment will be Saturday at 4 p.m. from Salem Baptist Church Cemetery, Apex.
Lacy is survived by his wife of forty three years, Mary Hudson Denson Oliver; ten children, Ronald Mann and wife, Sue of Kinston, Robert Oliver Jr. of New York, Lynne Oliver Mitchell and husband, Phil of Raleigh, Timothy Mann and wife, Dianne of Apex, Diane Mann Smith and fiancé, Carlisle Neithold of Fuquay-Varina, Mark Mann of Kinston, Gregg Oliver and wife, Teresa of Newport, Kimberly McIntyre and husband, Gary of Kinston, Phillip Oliver of Kinston and Mickey Mann of New Hill; daughter-in-law, Donna Fields Mann of Kinston; twenty four grandchildren, twenty two great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; and his caregiver, Edna Pittman of Snow Hill. In addition to his parents, Lacy was preceded in death by a son, Terry Mann; grandson, Brandon Mann; and a son-in-law, Billy Smith.
The family will receive friends Friday from 6-8 p.m. at Rivermont Baptist Church and at other times they will be at the home. Online condolences may be expressed at www.rousefh.com.
