Robert Leo Roloff, 87, formerly of Benton Harbor, Mich., died peacefully on November 17, 2012 at home in South Bend, Indiana.
Mass Christian Burial will be celebrated 11:30 A.M Wednesday at St. Bernard's Catholic Church, 555 E. Delaware, Benton Harbor, with Fr. William J. Jacobs, Jr. officiating. Burial will follow at North Shore Memory Gardens in Coloma. Friends may call from 4:00 until 7:00 P.M at Starks and Menchinger Chapel, 2650 Niles Rd., St. Joseph, with Liturgical Prayers recited at 7:00 P.M. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Joseph-Lincoln Senior Center or Center for Hospice and Palliative Care of South Bend. Bob was born in Ft. Atkinson, Wis., on October 25, 1925. He grew up in St. Joseph, Mich., graduating from St. Joseph Catholic High School in 1943. He joined the U.S Navy in September of 1943, serving on the U.S Hackleback submarine in the Japanese area of the North Pacific during WWII. After his discharge from the Navy in 1946, he worked for Superior Steel in Benton Harbor, then going to Whirlpool Corp. in St. Joseph where he worked for 36 years as a journeyman electrician. He retired from Whirlpool in May of 1988. Bob married Florence Baxter of Philadelphia in June of 1947 and they were together until her death in 1993. He married Marilee Gardner Nichols of Mishawaka, Ind., in September 1994, who survives him.
Bob learned to paint after his retirement, painting many oil and watercolors at home and at the St. Joseph Lincoln Senior Center, where he also contributed his talent to the Senior Center carousel horse displayed in downtown St. Joseph; he was very active at the Senior Center, painting and calling bingo. He loved to travel, camp with family, and fish. He served as a Cub Scout leader and coached little league. He was a member of St. Bernard's Parish. He lived a great life and will be missed by all that knew and loved him.
Bob is survived by his wife Marilee; his daughter Debra Bolin of Minneapolis, MN; his son David (Bobbie) Roloff, of St. Joseph Mich.; his brother, William (Shirley) Roloff, of Charlevoix, Mich; and his sister Nancy (Robert) Cooley of St. Joseph Mich.; stepdaughters Cathy (Randy) Leazenby, Vicki (Pat) Oliva and Laurie Nichols; his grandchildren Marshall Bolin, Lana Bolin, Jennifer Yob, Maxwell Holt, Kelly Roggow, and Steve Cope; step grandchildren; Rob Leazenby, Jennifer Stamper and Amber Oliva; and step-great-grandchildren; Amiya Stamper, Trayce Oliva and Caidence Eichorst; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by Florence, parent Joseph and Gladys (Rickers) Roloff, daughter, Dorothy (Holt), sister Joanne (Pomeroy) and sister Eleanor (Al) Shafer.
